History
In 2001, the Parish Building Fund was instituted as an annual expression of stewardship and shared responsibility to help those parishes that, because of aging building or catastrophic misfortune, must bear the financial burden of unusual structural repairs or renovation. Its goal is to ensure that even our struggling parishes are able to have worship spaces that are maintained in accordance to our liturgical guidelines.
Sometimes this is referred to as the 1% Parish Building Fund. This stems from the recommended parish contribution of 1% of their savings. To date over $2.5M has been collected and disbursed to our neediest parishes for projects that would be difficult for them to fund by themselves.
Process
During 2016, several revisions were made to the process of soliciting both projects and funds. It was determined that it made more sense to choose the projects first so parishes would know what the projects to which they are contributing. To help in this endeavor, we enlisted the assistance of key personnel from donor parishes. Now the annual process goes like this:
September Solicit parishes for projects where assistance is needed
November Committee of Parish and Diocesan personnel chooses the projects to be funded
December Solicit funds from parishes to support the chosen projects
April Start to disburse funds for projects as they are completed
